The SMGA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide rehabilitative golf experiences and family-inclusive golf opportunities for post-9/11 wounded war veterans in an effort to improve their quality of life. They proudly state in their mantra that they are “Empowering Wounded Warriors, One fairway at a Time.” This statement is true on many levels. Not only do our wounded veterans learn the game, they learn it alongside their brothers and sisters in arms. The camaraderie not only builds relationships that extend beyond the hospitals and golf courses, but helps in the healing process. The game itself also contributes to the healing process. Golf requires patience, precision, and tenacity; its therapeutic power has made a real difference in many veterans’ lives. The SMGA’s efforts have been recognized by many media outlets, earning the organizations co-founder, Jim Estes, the 2010 PGA Patriot Award.
